Last year, Elon Musk announced the construction of his new Giga factory in Grünheide in the German region of Brandenburg. This number 4 Gigafactory will be added in 2021 to the first three Tesla factories. These are located respectively in Nevada in the United States (1), New York (2), and Shanghai (3).

A solution for every problem

The construction of this huge factory by the Californian firm came up against many pitfalls from the outset. First of all, two environmental associations, the “Grüne Liga” and the “Association for Landscape Conservation and Species Protection in Bavaria” (VLAB) filed a complaint in summary proceedings. This requires the clearing of 300 hectares of forest. This wooded area is home to several protected species such as bats and would thus endanger them.

As a result, environmental groups managed to block construction for a few days. However, construction resumed with renewed vigour following Elon Musk’s announcements. The latter affirms that he will respect the laws and the environmental impact report of the project. To do so, he plans to replant three times as many trees as those felled and to install fences to prevent animals from entering the site.

Unfortunately for the firm, other obstacles to construction are getting in the way. Environmental conditions are once again slowing down the progress of the work. According to a soil study, the foundations initially planned on the plans will have to be revised, as the soil is inadequate. In addition, the plant’s water consumption could endanger the entire region by depleting its resources. The president of Tesla then proposes a review of certain manufacturing processes that could reduce water consumption.

Elon Musk – A man who takes risks

All of these changes result in a delay in construction. All the more so as the final permit for the construction of the plant has still not been granted, even though the building work has already begun.

Elon Musk took a huge risk by starting the work on the basis of a temporary and conditional permit. The entire project is in the balance. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed, Elon!

New plans = New permit

All these events lead to the launch of a new public inquiry in order to grant a new licence application to the manufacturer. According to Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s Minister of Economic Affairs, this new application would increase the chances of a licence being granted. However, this permit would not be issued until October, which would further delay the plans of the Californian engineering company.

This construction could certainly be considered a miscalculation. However, it offers considerable practical advantages. In the event that the authorities validate the construction of the factory, it will assemble the Tesla Model Y. It will also manufacture batteries and powertrains for Tesla cars.

However, production is expected to be only 100,000 cars per year. The manufacturer had planned 500,000 units per year, before encountering so many difficulties.

Gigafactory 4: Opportunities and festivities

In addition, the Gigafactory 4 is expected to create around 12,000 jobs, which is good news in these times of crisis. Not forgetting that the building will apparently be equipped, following a Twitter poll by Elon Musk which won over 90% of the participants, with a festive space on the building’s terrace. This could possibly be made available to the public. We can’t wait to test it all!

The unique building is reminiscent of the eccentricity of our favourite personality. On the menu: an entrance organized around a pool and equipped with large bay windows, facades equipped with large columns. But also hidden fireplaces and a roof equipped with multiple solar panels. This, in order to supply the site with renewable energy.

An ultra-modern and futuristic factory

Elon Musk gave a preview of the finalized project on his Twitter account, by publishing a first 3D rendering.

Production is expected to begin in July 2021. However, this seems a difficult deadline to meet, as work has barely begun.

Will Elon Musk be able to meet his deadline? What will his strategy be regarding this controversial factory? To be continued.
