{"id":86178,"date":"2024-07-08T16:14:57","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T15:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tesla-mag.com\/en\/?p=86178"},"modified":"2024-07-12T21:26:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T20:26:45","slug":"will-electric-cars-still-be-overpriced-and-undesirable-in-12-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tesla-mag.com\/en\/will-electric-cars-still-be-overpriced-and-undesirable-in-12-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Electric Cars Still Be Overpriced and Undesirable in 12 Years?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Absolutely not, because some of them are neither overpriced nor undesirable right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last December, I bought this supposedly \u201coverpriced\u201d and \u201cundesirable\u201d electric car\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-here-s-what-i-paid\">Here\u2019s What I Paid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hold on a minute, you say! $50K for a car is crazy! Don\u2019t worry, I completely agree with you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-here-s-what-i-got-in-return\">Here\u2019s What I Got in Return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I bought this Model Y fully aware of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I received a $7,500 federal tax credit when I did my taxes this year \u2013 yes, I got it!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I also received a $5,000 Colorado tax credit when I did my taxes this year \u2013 same deal!<br>(And as it turns out, had I waited a week to buy my Model Y in 2024, the $7,500 would\u2019ve been taken right off the price at purchase, rather than having to file my taxes to get that credit.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, my net price was $36,970, which, by the way, is quite a bit less than the average car sold in the USA. That\u2019s still high, comparable to the $38K I once paid for a top-of-the-line RAV4 Hybrid, but still more than many people pay for cars. (And there are indeed cheaper EVs, but we\u2019ll get to that\u2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-the-model-y-overpriced\">Is the Model Y \u201cOverpriced\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For $37K, I bought a car that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the best I\u2019ve ever owned (subjective, I know, but bear with me)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has 76 cubic feet of cargo space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I can sleep in with the rear seats folded down and keep the interior at my preferred temperature using \u201ccamp mode\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows me to leave my dog inside, no matter the weather, using \u201cdog mode,\u201d which keeps the interior at 70\u00ba or any preferred temp<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds \u2013 you might not care about acceleration, but a car that can accelerate like that can 1) help you merge onto the highway quicker and safer, and 2) power up hills rather than struggle in the slow lane with 18-wheelers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes Forward Collision Warning, Active Emergency Braking, and Lane Departure Avoidance as standard features<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has reclining rear seats (!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Requires no keys or fobs but is controlled by my phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows me to heat or cool the car from the comfort of my home or anywhere else<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can be unlocked remotely, even from the other side of the globe \u2013 handy if you forget you borrowed something from a friend and they show up to collect it while you\u2019re elsewhere (\u201cI\u2019ll unlock the car for you, just let me know when you\u2019ve got it, and I\u2019ll re-lock the car\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatically puts the car in \u201cPark\u201d when I open the driver\u2019s door (it\u2019s so quiet that I forgot to put it in Park probably 20% of the time)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can be controlled with my voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSet the temp to 68\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cTurn on the windshield wipers\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cPlay Darklands by The Jesus and Mary Chain\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Records any activity around the car<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A friend sent me a video of someone putting a $1,000 ding in his driver door \u2013 he gave that to the police, who ticketed the driver and informed his insurance company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing people causing more damage to Teslas and getting caught red-handed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lets me send any address from my phone to the car for later navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has seat heaters \u2013 even in the back seats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can charge anywhere in Tesla\u2019s Supercharger network (I\u2019ve already driven mine from Colorado to California once, and I\u2019m going to do it again later this month)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has blind spot cameras that turn on when you signal a turn (this view is after having turned, just before the Tesla automatically turned off the turn signal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a panoramic glass roof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course, there\u2019s MUCH more. Is it overpriced? NO WAY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-undesirable\">Is It Undesirable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the reasons I\u2019ve outlined above, I\u2019d argue it\u2019s NOT undesirable. And I don\u2019t seem to be the only one who thinks so \u2013 in 2023, Tesla sold 1.23 MILLION Model Ys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-you-pay-less-for-an-electric-car\">Can You Pay Less for an Electric Car?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, you could buy a Nissan Leaf for a lot less\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not my choice, but I\u2019ve driven one and it\u2019s a decent car. I would much rather drive a Leaf than a comparably priced gas car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-to-the-future\">Looking to the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I admit that there aren\u2019t many lower-cost options now, but that will certainly change in the next 12 years. Battery prices are dropping, and we will see basic EV models competing with the lower-end ICE cars that currently exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will they be great? No, but I\u2019d argue that the cheapest car currently available in the USA \u2013 the Mitsubishi Mirage \u2013 is not a great car. I\u2019ve never driven it, I\u2019ve never even seen it, but there is no way it could be a great car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-credits-are-a-major-factor\">Tax Credits Are a Major Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, I\u2019m sure people will say that without the tax credits, the Model Y is, in fact, overpriced. I would argue that point. Yes, I myself would not have bought it at $50K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that doesn\u2019t mean I think it\u2019s overpriced. I suspect it stacks up quite well against other $50K cars, so it\u2019s not overpriced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not being able to afford something doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s overpriced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But battery technology continues to advance, and battery prices continue to drop, so I\u2019m confident that EVs will become more affordable, just like any technology becomes more affordable over time. Did you buy a flat screen TV when they first came out? I sure didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, no, electric cars will not be overpriced and undesirable in 12 years.
