Do you power a cooler, a tool or your home from your Tesla with a third-party V2L adapter, such as one from Elejoy? Hold off on software update 2026.38.5.1. Since 19 October, owners on the Tesla Motors Club forum have reported that these devices now cut out after a few minutes once the update is installed. Tesla has not commented. A French version of this article is available here.
What owners are reporting
The first report came from a Model 3 owner posting as FalconFour, who had used an Elejoy box almost daily for a year and a half at 3 to 5 kW. After the update, the car “discharges for about 3 minutes” before stopping with a battery fault, “BMS_a076_SW_Dch_While_Charging”. The usual tricks, going through Theater mode or Camp mode, no longer work. According to data from his tracking app, he was previously on 2026.26.6.5, so the change happened somewhere between those two versions.
Another owner says the cut-off comes “after about 15-20 minutes regardless of the load”. He adds that Elejoy sent him test firmware, which did not fix the problem. These are owner reports that we could not reproduce: neither Tesla nor Elejoy has published a statement.
Why the adapters stop
Third-party V2L adapters plug into the fast-charging port and make the car believe it is in a charging session, so that power can flow the other way. On the forum, several owners believe the car now compares the energy going in and out during the session and shuts off when the balance turns negative. That is their analysis, not an explanation from Tesla.
These devices have never been offered or approved by Tesla. One participant in the thread said he was surprised it took Tesla “this long to patch the hole”, and called some of these devices dangerous.
Tesla’s own answer: Powershare
The change comes as Tesla expands its own discharge feature, Powershare. Since 6 October, new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States from 1 October can back up a home equipped with a Powerwall 3, using a bidirectional inverter designed for the job. Powershare has not been announced for Europe so far.
What to do if you use a V2L adapter
- Don’t install the update as long as you rely on your adapter.
- Check your software version under Controls > Software on the touchscreen.
- Ask your adapter’s manufacturer before updating: only they can say whether a fix is coming.
- For a lasting solution, a portable power station charged from the car or from solar panels does the same job without touching the car’s battery.
